Dementia – Alzheimer’s disease

Dementia is a group of disorders characterised by abnormal cognitive functions like memory loss, inattentiveness, behavioral disturbances and so on. Categorization of dementia is generally done based on the causes of these symptoms. Common causes that affect the brain leading to dementia are degenerative, infective, autoimmune, thyroid disorders and tumors. Degenerative dementias are particularly common and the most common condition in this category is Alzheimer’s disease.

The disease usually affects the elderly population and is slowly progressive. The symptoms of the disease is ignored by the patient in the initial stages and is mistaken for normal symptoms of ageing. It may take several months to years for the patient to consult the doctor from the onset of the symptoms.

About Dr Aravinda RV

Dr Aravinda took his MD (General Medicine) from the Sardar Patel Medical College in Bikaner, Rajasthan before attaining a DM in Neurology at the Burdwan Medical College, Burdwan, West Bengal. During his residency he acquired fine diagnostic and clinical skills from eminent professors in the fields of medicine and neurology. He has presented papers at state- and national-level conferences and has to his credit many publications in well-known journals. His oral presentation titled “Mild Cognitive Impairment in Elderly Population” received the prestigious Gangadhar Verma Memorial award at the RAJAPICON-2012. He obtained a fellowship in Intensive Care Medicine in 2013. He is interested in clinical medicine and neurology with its basic diagnostic electrophysiology and its applied therapeutics.
